I once heard a definition of family as people you are willing to make financial sacrifices for. In terms of propagation of the species, family is an important social unit.
People aren't sacrificial lambs for other people or strangers. We might choose to help others out of compassion, but taken to the extreme then others become dependent upon our generosity and don't learn self reliance.
We need self interest, which some call greed, to better ourselves. Society is stronger when more people are working hard and are self reliant.
